For most roles in the company, the scope of responsibilities is much broader and you have an ability to make an impact.  You can directly see the results of your efforts, and how what you do contributes to financial and business success. 

How does that stack up to your current position? 

Our client is a 20 year old provider of services designed to showcase residential and commercial properties.  What they do brings out the best in their client's home or place of business, and transforms it into a not simply a place to work or sleep, but into a showcase for their personality and culture.  They've met with great success and rapid growth, particularly over the past 5 years, and as a result the size and sophistication of the business has grown also. 

This success has led to the need for a Controller for the organization.  This person has all the typical Controller responsibilities:
  • Sourcing information, integrating, and reporting core information in the development of Financial Statements.
  • Payroll, Billing, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivables
  • Determining accounting entries and the development of standard financial statements including Sales Reports, Income Statements  and Balance Sheet
  • Providing insight to company executives on cash flow and making recommendations
  • Preparing information for taxes
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements
At any given time, there are a dozen or more Controller jobs open in this area.  So, what's different or unique about this one?

What's It Take?

You'll be experienced in all the typical controller functions shown above, and ideally have experience in a growing organization.  You'll have a track record of streamlining and improving workflows, and not just doing the operational things needed, but making them work smoother and with less effort so you can spend time on more proactive work. You'll be the type that can work effectively and collaboratively with anyone, from the owners to the associates in the warehouse or the field, delivering the services.  

A solid background in accounting packages like Qucikbooks or Zoho or another package is required, and the ability to extract data for analysis via Excel or other tools is a big plus.  Strong skills with Excel and Word, along with experience with Powerpoint and other tools is needed. CPA is not required but evidence of ongoing professional development is a big advantage.  

Finally, experience in a business that delivers both product and services to consumers and businesses that is seasonal in nature, is a real advantage.
